Stripe disputes, end to end

You counter the dispute once, from the Stripe Dashboard, and you cannot add to it afterwards.

The clock

7 to 21 days, set by the card network

Stripe imposes no window of its own; it passes through the network's. Your dispute page shows the date. The issuer then takes 60 to 75 days, which is neither your deadline nor a delay you can shorten.

reason code, as Stripe shows it

Partly. The Dashboard shows Stripe's own category — fraudulent, product not received, duplicate and five others. The underlying network code sits in the API as network_reason_code. Argue to the network code, not the category.

What Stripe does for you

  • yesPrefills background sections — shipping details, refund policy, customer and product details — from your account.
  • yesOn Visa 10.4, evaluates your transaction history for compelling evidence 3.0 and prefills the fields it needs.
  • yesAdds the 3-D Secure authentication indicator itself where the payment was authenticated.

What it leaves to you

  • noIt will not tell you which exhibit the reason code actually turns on.
  • noIt will not let you correct a thin submission — one shot, then the record closes.
  • noEditing a prefilled compelling-evidence field can break your eligibility for it.

the common misreading

Stripe's eight categories are not reason codes

Fraudulent covers Visa 10.4 and Mastercard 4837, which want different evidence. Find the network code before you write a word, or you will answer the wrong question well.

Now build what Stripe will accept

  • One merged PDF per evidence type is exactly what a numbered exhibit index produces.
  • The 4.5 MB ceiling is the real constraint: compress the images, never the argument.
  • The copy-paste block goes in the free-text section; the exhibits go in as one file.
